Computing / Greetings From eyeOS
« on: March 22, 2009, 12:15:11 am »
Kind of an odd Greeting.

eyeOS is an operating system in the cloud. You install the package on your server, or like in my case, on your host.

once installed you open up a web browser and navigate to the web address to where it is installed and you log in. You are then presented with a desktop like web page. You can run applications such as a word processor, spreadsheets, games and so on and so forth. Sure there have been lots of web  pages that do this but this is one of the first that is installed on your own server.

mine is at www.digisal.com/eye

let me know if you want a username to try it out.

Here is a screen shot if this post as i type it:

I am using Google Chrome to use it.

Computing / Greetings From Mac Mini
« on: March 10, 2009, 07:17:31 pm »
Ah, can you believe I am posting this from an Apple product?? I can't believe it!! grrr

In  our Radiology department we are wanting / needing to go with digital xrays as apposed to films. Saving on costs is the number one reason. Well everyone knows that Apple is best used for graphics so most of those PACs (picture archive and communication systems) are all Apple based so we got one, or are trying one that is Apple based. The open source Osirix viewer.

So what did I do? Ordered a 17inch Mac Book for the doc, a Mac Pro server, two 23inch cinema displays and this Mac Mini.

Well, I keep telling the doc, a Radiologist, that I don't know Mac so I always have a hard time when he asks me to do stuff. lol So today he tells me to take the Macbook so I can learn the platform, but I didnt want to take it from him so I said I'd take the mini and here I am, on the Mini.

It is past 5 so I am about to head out but wanted to post the greeting. I cant even Maximize this window!! So I'm going to need help.

Computing / Greetings from Windows 7
« on: January 25, 2009, 06:37:55 pm »
Greetings from a Dell Latitude e6500 running Windows 7 Build 7000. I keep reading good things about this OS so I downloaded and installed it along side XP and Ubuntu 8.10. Whoo hoo triple booting.

Had a hard time getting online but that is an issue with my Linksys DD-WRT router. I think I hosed the settings while trying to do a bridge to another DD-WRT in the garage.

Anyway, I have not played to much with it. I installed all the operating systems on Friday but had not have had time to play it until now.

This things is running IE8 Beta and i already have trouble rendering pages. My blog looks funny and the text area in which I am posting this is split down the middle. But I am pretty sure MS will say its the coding of the webpages that is the problem and not IE.

I will try and fix these problems by checking if Firefox and Chrome work.

Anyone else tried 7?

Computing / Greetings from VirtualBox and Ubuntu
« on: July 19, 2008, 09:35:17 pm »
Many Many Moons ago I used a boot leg copy of VMware to try and virtualize  Windows XP in my then Windows 2000 box. My machine could not hand the load back then.

Fast forward to today and I am now running Virtualbox which is FREE and it lets me Virtualize all sorts of Operating Systems as well. At the moment I am posting this from my Vista machine (yes i said Vista) BUT I am inside the latest Linux Ubuntu release.

Installing was a breeze. I downloaded the Alternate ISO disc from the ubuntu website. The alternate disc does not have the GUI install menu. And within Virtualbox I told it to boot to that ISO file and it was as if I was booting to a burnt CD. Before this whole process I also created a Virtual Hard Drive within Virtualbox so that ubuntu will use during install. It is just one Five gig file that Ubuntu sees as a hard drive. It even formats it.

Anyway, there has been a lot of talk of Virtualization lately and I gave this a go to get familiar with it again.

I need to get this to do Fullscreen though. It only doing a small window. Need to update the drivers or something.

here is a screeny. Kinda big though so i'll make it clickable

Computing / Greetings From Fujitsu Lifebook B Series 2131
« on: July 06, 2008, 06:47:29 pm »
Greetings!!!!

Well hello there. I got this thing from a friend for 50 bucks a few weeks ago. I had been sitting on it and finally ordered the power supply i needed from eBay for 23 bucks.

It came loaded with Windows ME. As soon as I got the power supply I ripped into the sucker and removed it.

This thing does not come with a CD ROM nor a Floppy so I tried with and External CD rom and that was a no go either. So i Pulled out the hd and installed it on another old school laptop i have laying around.

At first, and for giggles, I tried putting XP on the drive but once i moved it to the fujitsu it was giving me blue screens of death. I am pretty sure XP would not have run good at all on this thing. It only has a 200mhz Processor and 64mb of ram!!

The whole plan was to put Linux on it anyway.

So in the picture above you see Firefox running on D.S.L. Which stands for Damn Small Linux. Firefox was really really slow. It slowed down the whole system.

This thing is supposed to be touchscreen and i have seen drivers for Linux but i barely got this thing going and so I am posting it here. :)

Computing / Rob's Spyware Virus problem 1031f
« on: June 14, 2008, 04:11:30 pm »
Well Rob was having some serious problems with his PC. See here and here

He brought it me and I took a stab at it. I'm writing about it in hopes someone with the same problem will find this since I did not find to much help with this particular bug but lots of other viruses /spyware do the same thing so its probably universal.

In his blog he writes that he had no access to the Task Manager and I had this similar problem with a bug awhile back at work and www.superantispyware.com removed the problematic spyware so I told him to use that. When I got it from him it was already installed and updated so I ran a complete scan. It found around 100 problems. It removed them and rebooted. Still no Task Manager.

I checked in MSCONFIG and there was a few things in there that didnt look right. Two letter executabels. Like sw.exe vw.exe and others. All of which were running. Since his Task Manager was not working I plugged in my USB Drive and launched Process Explorer, found here. I killed those running programs and then went to \windows\system32 and deleted those files. There was around 6 of them.

In the MSCONFIG he also had a file named 1031f.exe that was set to run at startup also. It said it was located in the System32 folder. A quick look in the Process Explorer said it was not running. I went to the System32 folder and it was not there either. I thought maybe it was hidden so when i went to turn on the setting to let me see hidden files I found there was no Folder OPtions in the Tools menu nor was there a Folders Options in the Control Panel. A quick Google showed me how to re-enable that option in Group Policy

    * Goto Group Policy Editor. (Start->Run->"gpedit.msc")
    * Navigate to "User Configuration >> Administrative Templates >> Windows Components >> Windows Explorer.
    * Finally, on the right enable the option of "Remove the Folder Options menu item from the Tools Menu" by right clicking on it and selecting disable.

Once I was able to get into Folder Options, no matter how many times I told it to show me hidden files the setting wouldnt stick. So I wasnt able to view the hidden files. I went back to Process Explorer and it has the option on top to Find a Handle or DLL. I typed in 1031f.exe and it showed me that it was indeed running but it had injected itself into svchost.exe. I had to get rid of that file.

While Googling the Folder Options fix I found a Utility that Renables features that viruses have the habit of disabling. Sure I could do it all thru the registry but that was tedius. The utility is found here.

I saved that app onto my thumb drive and rebooted Robs PC into Safe Mode. Once I was in there, I ran that utility and reenabled The Hidden Files, the Task Manager and others. After that I was then able to go into the SYSTEM32 folder and Delete 1031f.exe. Then I ran another app on my USB drive called Reg Scanner, found here. This app lets me search the whole registry very quickly and it groups all the keys with my search value together. So I did a search for 1031f and then told Regscanner to give me a Reg file that would Delete all those keys referring to that file.

He also had something else giving me errors on every boot called AMVO.exe. Deleted that as well from Startup and from the System32 folder AND from the registry.

I also ran CCleaner to delete all his internet temporay files and cookies for good measure.

I rebooted the pc and everything was accessible again BUT his Task Manager would not load. Why? because that virus had deleted it. So I copied it from my PC to his and he was good to go.

I gave the PC back to Rob last night. Thats my story.

Computing / KatMouse

http://ehiti.de/katmouse/

i love this little app!!

all it does is it lets you scroll windows even if they are not in focus. you have to have a wheel button though. the NUMBER ONE use i get out of this is while chatting. if i have the chat window open and Firefox open, and i am reading something or going thru google reader i just move the mouse pointer over FF and then i can scroll away while the Chant Window is still on top.

I love this app.

Also helps when i need to compare files in different folders. i dont have to mess with bring something to focus.

i love this app.
