Computing / Greetings From Chromium OS
« on: December 10, 2009, 01:19:49 pm »
Just like Chrome OS but the open source version of it.

I am running this off of a 1gb USB stick on a month old Dell Inspiron. Wifi no workey so im plugged in.

Its pretty fast and if you use Google Chrome web browser as I do, then you will feel right at home. Since its so new there is no options for anything except for all the Chrome settings. I wanted to speed up the touchpad but thats a no go.

These are the destructions I used:

I tried to boot into Chromium OS on my Dell desktop. I fairly OLD SX260 but I could not get parseed the sign on screen.

Computing / Ditched FireFox for Chromium in Ubuntu
« on: November 16, 2009, 10:22:02 pm »
Ugh, Firefox was taking up way way way to much CPU cycles so I ditched it for Chromium. Chromium is the open source version of Chrome. There is no official Chrome release from Google.

Here is how to install it in Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala:

Computing / Greetings From Dell Optiplex SX60
« on: November 14, 2009, 08:06:06 pm »
Well, as I said before. I was running Ubuntu 9.10 on my old Gateway. It works but it could be slow at times.

After 55 years, Valley Diagnostic Clinic shut its doors. This is where I spent 5 years of my life taking care of the network. I left 5 months before it closed but I am doing some work for a few of the doctors that are opening their own practice so I have been in and out of VDC over the past few weeks. Well, this thursday they started putting stuff up for sale for the public. I managed to snag a box full of ethernet and two computers that were on sale.

Now, the guy that replaced me was in charge of making sure there was no patient data in these computers so he took the hard drives out AND the memory! The memory??? ugh... luckily I had a 512 stick here at home.

So, I put Ubuntu 9.10 on this thing and its running good:

Its a Pentium 4 with a 2.4 Ghz CPU.

Very small form factor also.

Computing / Can't make file executable
« on: November 08, 2009, 11:54:19 pm »
Ever since I installed Ubuntu on this machine I have not been able to install Adobe Air because I can not make the BIN file executable. I have done it from the command line

Code: [Select]
chmod +x AdobeAIRInstaller.bin
and I have right clicked it, under properties, Permissions, Make file executable, but still nada.

Computing / [SOLVED] Certain gnome apps would crash
« on: November 08, 2009, 06:43:28 pm »
Also, after updating to 9.10 I had several apps that would only run for a bit and then would close.

apps like

Gwibber (for twitter)
The new Ubuntu Software Center

When opening them up from the terminal I would get this error

"ERROR: Caught a segmentation fault while loading plugin file:
/usr/lib/gstreamer-0.10/libgstlibvisual.so"

so after doing some googling someone said to just remove it, rename it or move it.

So I ran this command to move it and rename it

Code: [Select]
mv /usr/lib/gstreamer-0.10/libgstlibvisual.so libgstlibvisual.so.OLD
after that everything worked great.

Computing / [SOLVED] Trouble Burning CDs in Ubuntu
« on: November 08, 2009, 06:36:17 pm »
After updating to 9.10, I wasnt able to Burn CDs in Brasero or in K3b. I would get an error in K3b that said

"cdrecord has no permission to open the device"

And in Brasero I was getting an error that said:

"the medium is not writable with the current set of plugins"

I did some googling and found that I needed to change the permissions to my CDROM folders.

so ran these commands

Code: [Select]
chmod 777 /media/cdrom1
chmod 777 /media/cdrom0
chmod 777 /dev/sr1

after that i was able to burn!

Computing / Using Ubuntu Daily
« on: November 06, 2009, 07:49:10 pm »
A few months back my beloved Media Center PC went on the fritz and have not been able to find the power supply I think i need for it. I am really looking for the exact same computer or the newer ones. Mine is a Hp z545.

So while its down I have ben using my very first computer after WebTV for internet. And I am running Ubuntu. Its a Gateway 700. Which means it has an AMD 700mhz processor!

Anyway, i been using Linux and Ubuntu off and on for years but I always end up Googling things I should know so in an attempt to make these forums useful I will try and post everything I google and everything I find out about it.

So off the bat I am going to post the problems I had after updating to latest 9.10 or Karmic Koala, as its called.

Stay tuned.

Site News / Updated to Latest SMF 1.1.10

I guess I was a little outdated on this. I was at version 1.1.3 and spammers were getting in. One posted some nasty stuff today. Sorry about that. So glad I put the forum feed to go to my google reader, otherwise who knows how long it would be in there!

Also, this theme which I love so much is not compatible. Looks like it still works but since i am logged in as admin mode i see the big warnings everwhere I go.
