Yatta Yatta Yatta / Job interview
« on: March 08, 2004, 12:31:13 pm »
well i got  a job interview finally.  its at applied materials where albert works, not exactly what i had wanted to do, but no one else has returned calls for my resume.  i got about 9 apps out floating around right now.  i would have waited to finish out the semester but all i have been doing is moving computers and installing software.  i feel like in back in semester one of the internship here.  im not getting the troubleshooting experience i was after, nor the networking skills im gonna need for future jobs.  so if they ask me to start working for them, im gonna say yes and keep on sending the resumes and applications until i hear of something better.  good luck on that valley diagnostics job sal !

Computing / Whats a Cantenna?
« on: February 17, 2004, 04:20:08 pm »
know anyone with a wireless networking connection but you are either too far away or you just cant get a strong and steady signal?  well never fear!  your answer is just a hardware and electronics store away.  check out these sites.  the first sells you the whole package for $50 but if you make it yourself from the second two sites you can do it for half that.

http://www.cantenna.com

http://www.turnpoint.net/wireless/cantennahowto.html

http://www.cruftbox.com/cruft/docs/cantenna.html

really useful if you have a laptop with a wireless card, or say a POCKET PC with wireless access.  if you make one, or have one lemme know how it holds up :)

Computing / IE problem
« on: February 07, 2004, 09:47:28 pm »
aight i got a problem with internet explorer.  i had managed to lose my copy of mcafee internet security and spyware wormed its way on my PC and changed some IE registry settings.  i fixed most of em but now i have a really annoying problem.  whenever i type in a site in the address bar IE freaks out and thinks it needs to search for it using this standard:  for example im typing www.digisal.com into the bar, IE starts looking for http://ehttp.cc/?www.digisal.com
ive looked in all the registry settings for IE but cant seem to find where this would be getting its info.  any help would be greatly appreciated, the annoyance factor is a high 9 on this.

Computing / New tech sites
« on: January 26, 2004, 01:10:20 pm »
Dont know if you have heard of these sites or not, but I thought it would be beneficial to others if I posted them up.

www.blackviper.com   and  sourceforge.net

BV.com is freakin cool, tells alot about windows services and what they do, which can be turned off, turned off safely, and cant be touched.  Tweaks for a faster machine and lots of other stuff.  I got a new hard drive this weekend and did a fresh install of XP Pro and followed his steps for a faster machine and this hardrive boots from start to finish in under 30 seconds.  Thats half the time as my last setup.  Very much worth the browse time if nothing else than to read up on windows processes and various security functions.

Unfortunately I havent really poured over sourceforge.net.  I remember checking it out the first time I went there but got enthralled in the tweak section at BV.  Ill check it out and get back.

Computing / PC upgrades :)
« on: January 16, 2004, 12:51:54 pm »
So I get my big-arse paycheck in from the month of December and I have money to burn!  I decide to head over to Fry's and shop around a while and as I'm driving over there with Damian (new intern) I decide on getting new RAM and a new Video card in addition to the home theater system I was already planning on.  So I get to the computer parts area and start checking out RAM (looking for DDR PC2100) and I remember that online they have a special: 512MB for $83.99 with a $30.00 mail-in rebate.  53 bucks for 512MB of DDR aint too shabby, so I ask the sales guy there and he tells me that they dont honor online specials in-store. ???  OK, I can handle that, some stores just don't mix online and aisle merchandise ads.  So after he tells me this he walks off, doesnt ask if he can help me find anything else or make a pitch for some other RAM, just walks off.   I spend the next 30 f***in minutes waiting for some dumbarse to get off the phone with his girlfriend, BEHIND THE COUNTER mind you, helping her with a computer problem.  Dude looked right at me several times throughout the conversation and has the nerve to hang up the phone and ask someone who just walked up if they needed help!  :2gunsfiring_v1:  So the dude who initially walked off tells loverboy that I was there first and I FINALLY get my RAM.   :fing07:

Now I walk over to the video/monitor section of the store, ask one person for a GeForce 5200 256MB video card for the price Im after.  They walk me to the wall, pick one up and hand it to me.  Under a minute.  Now what the hell are they feeding those guys?  Maybe they should rotate people in the computer departments, cause the customer service blew chunks in the mobo/ram area.  But now Im happy cause I have my crap   :2thumbsup:  and time for  -> :computing:

My mobo is a Shuttle AK32 v3.1 (or close to it) and has 4 RAM slots.  Currently it had 2 sticks of 256.  So I move the stick that was in slot 1 back to slot 3 and put the 512 in the primary.  Plug in the PC and boot up.  BIOS only picks up 512, so now im thinkin: "Which 512?"  So I pull the 256 from slot 3 and boot up again.  BIOS picks up 256 now.  Now Im getting pissed.  All that time I spent waiting for the dam RAM and now it dont even freakin work?!?!  So I pull the last two sticks out and boot up.  Get the little beepies for no/bad RAM and power down.  Put the 512 in primary and boot.  BAM! recognition!! WOOT!  Put 256 in slot 2.  BAM!  recognition!  Finally, 256 in slot 3.  BOOYA!!  Its freakin nice to see your BIOS doing a RAM check all the way to 1GB.

Vid card was a breeze.  XP loaded the drivers I needed and everything.  I can see blades of grarse in my game now.  I see trees in the distance and even a sunrise on the right planet.  Water has reflections and ripples, shadows are 3-D rendered and change with motion as well as time (you can actualy watch the shadow of a house grow, shrink, and grow with the sun cycle).

Now my computer boots faster, load apps quicker, and shutsdown faster.  All I need now is a 40-60 gig HD so I can consolidate alot of games / downloads.

« on: December 30, 2003, 05:49:48 pm »
so i get to move tomorow.  heres what sux, no internet for 5 days...im gonna go nuts.  im gonna owe 150 bucks for electricity... hopefully it wont be due until after the 14th (payday).  rent is freakin high.   good news: 730sq feet, one bedroom (lower elec bill), first floor.  so im getting a tv and can only watch air channels until tuesday.  guess that isnt too bad, but i need that internet!!  prolly gonna get sent to helpdesk next semester. and i would really rather not.  but it is highly recommended that if i apply for the job that i take what time i can at promontory while i can.  im not gonna look forward to moving over there either.  from what i hear they just buddy jack for a couple days and throw you to the sharks.  oh well, the pay is the same and mike got away with sleeping for the first half of the day, maybe it wont be all bad.

Computing / Welchia Worm Virus
« on: September 24, 2003, 03:21:21 pm »
Those who are into computers should check out this site:

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.welchia.worm.html

It is a description of a virus by symantec.  Now this virus actually has good things arseociated with it.  Bad is that it can cause a DoS crash, good thing is it will actually remove the blaster virus from your computer!  This thing came out in middle August, and Tuesday the State Dept gets whacked with it.  Bet theres an opening in their IT department...
