Title: The New Site
Post by: neuromancer on December 11, 2005, 11:56:56 am
I had to finally go to IE on the PC to see what the look was supposed to be.

Mac-angle:

1. Safari totally blows the site. No formatting, no color, no nothing. Just a stew of content mashed into the rendered page. Although it did successfully tableize the lower content of the home page.

2. Firefox gave me color and a semblance of formatting but blew chunks on the lower content formatting.

3. IE on the mac did better than the other two but the left nav stuff bleeds content into the center content and the menu bar at the top only shows "home".

PC angle

1. Firefox blows the lower content formatting.

2. IE renders content "perfectly".

Forum does well on all. It just seems to be an issue with the home page (although Safari just throws up on all pages).

Well, that sucks!  I didnt think i was going to have issues with the other browsers because what i am using is the default template with color changes and a slight mod with table sizes.

The default template had the tables set width at 809 but i hated the site not utilizing the whole page so i hacked it away to let me use 100% as the width.

ill have to see what sort of fixes are out there for firefox.

thanks.

Also, did you manually delete the quoted text when you hit discuss in forums? or did it not put it there manually?

And do you think its confusing to have a Read More link and a View Discussion on the front page? If you click Read More you will see all the discussions that are in the forums under the article?

I like having the link up front because you can see how many comments their is?

Once i get going in the forums i will put a module in the front page that will display latest topics and replies. If i put it up now it will display those old topics as new.

how fun!!!

It put the quoted stuff in automatically but I turfed it. Safari (my browser by default) is having immense problems rendering. The rest except IE seem to have problems with table cell sizes in the lower part where they appear side by side on the home page. A little tweeking back on the page resize might cure that?

Ok, do me a favor. dont turf the quotes that it does. the reason being is this. Say you were browsing the forums and saw the title The New Site, and you started reading it, you wouldnt know what the post was about because there wasnt a quote nor a link to the story in the front page.  Know what I mean? Leave the link at least.

and man, that safari thing pisses me off!!..lol.... wish i could find a good deal on an ibook. send me yours til i can fix this.  ???

I understand about the quote thing now. Since the first to discuss would have that included so future use of the thread is relative to the post on the front page.

As far as the Safari thing goes don't sweat it too much. Safari can get wonky at times. I can use Firefox when I am here. There does seem to be one strange thing with Firefox though. The lower postings on the front page appear to be divided into two columns. The left column takes about 75-80% of the sapce and the right column is shoved into the remaining space. This achieves a phat left column and a very slim and tall right column.

Other than a few problems the place looks good and it WORKS. I am anxious to see how things progress as I may try an install at some point. I have always been partial to the forum that you are using and I am thinkling of jumping to Gallery 2.0.

You might try something if you are so inclined.

The post on the front page titled " Citroen" has a long arse URL in it. The width of the left hand stuff is sized exactly to the length of that URL (in Firefox). Chop it and let's see what happens to the formatting. Perhaps the system is unable to parse a suitable width for those cells because of that URL.

I started pawing around with an install of Joomla on my local dev box. I got a question for you. What do you have the templates folder and the images within this directory chmod set to on your install? I may have isolated an issue with chmod of these files with the ability of Safari to actually "see/render" the template that is actively loading.

the template folder is at: drwxr-xr-x

and the template i am using, which is the default solarflare_II is at drwxr-xr-x

and the images are at drwxr-xr-x

i also noticed that the site looks crappy on an 800x600 screen res. so i need to adjust that a bit.
